Ms. Dolukhanova is a People's Artist of the Armenian SSR and the RSFSR, In 1939 Ms.
Dolukhanova made her debut on the stage of the Spendiarov Theater of Opera and Ballet in Erevan.
She soon left the opera stage for concert performances. In 1944 she was made soloist of the All-Union
Radio and Television. In 1957 she graduated from the Gnesin Musical-Pedagogical Institute.
In 1959 she became a soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed on the
most important stages of the world, in Germany, Italy, France, England, the USA, Japan, Israel,
Argentina, and many other countries.
The deep, velvety tender timbre of Ms. Dolukhanova's low voice, the magnificent ease of her vocal
ornamentation in every register, have never failed to astonish and amaze even the most demanding
critics at home and abroad. And the public held in highest esteem not only the beauty of her voice,
but the sophisticated artistry of style and the extraordinarily broad repertoire, which included works
of Bach, Handel, Verdi, Rakhmaninov, Debussy, Pulenka, Sviridov, and Prokofiev.
She was one of the best performers of baroque music and old Italian masters.
In 1966 Zara Dolukhanova was the first vocalist in the USSR to receive the nation's highest award,
the Lenin Prize. At present Ms. Dolukhanova is active as a teacher.
