Makvala Kasrashvili is the director of the Bolshoi Theater's opera troupe, has been decorated
at the Russian State Award, and bears the title Honored Artist of the USSR.
She was born in Georgia and graduated from the Tbilisi State Conservatory in 1996 where she
studied in a Vera Davydova’s class. In the same year she debuted with the Bolshoi Theater.
She started her international career in 1966 with a triumphant debut at the Metropolitan Opera
in New York as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin. She has performed at Convent Garden,
die Wiener Staatoper, Arena di Verona, The Huston Grand Opera, The Washington Opera,
The Seattle Opera, The New Jersey Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, The Norwegian Opera,
The Canadian Opera, The Seoul Opera, Comune di Bologna, The Portland Festival, and
The Bard Festival (USA). Her partners have included famous singers like Ruggero Raimondi,
Nikolai Ghiaurov, Nikolai Gedda, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Thomas Allen. She has collaborated
with conductors including Sir Colin Davis, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Penderecki,
Michael Tillson Thomas, Charles Dutoit, Nello Santi, Giuseppe Patane, Daniel Oren,
Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, and Vladimir Spivakov.
Her repertoire includes approximately 100 operas including Eugene Onegin, Queen of Spades,
War and Peace, The Maid of Orleans, Aida, Otello, Un Ballo in Maschera, Tosca, Turandot,
Don Giovanni, Salome, Electra, and Lohengrin.
Throughout her career she maintained an active concert schedule that included performances
with The BBC Orchestra, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, The London Royal Orchestra,
The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Montreal Symphony Orchestra,
Orchestra Sinfonica dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia,
and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.
